I recently came across this article on What is Fine Art- what distinguishes Fine artists from hobbyists or amateurs.
Broadly speaking the writer makes the point that it is when the artist engages his mind, or paints about the thoughts, feelings and issues in his mind that distinguishes her/him from someone that merely wishes to portray what is in front of them, whether it is a landscape, still life or portrait. Taking that at face value presents a number of problems for me. I have known many fine artists -and history is full of them- who painted landscapes.
I don't want to get into an argument here, but rather would like to refer you to this article and hear your thoughts on it.
